Reparenting the Figure: Temporal paradox, grief and repair

Mary Enoch Elizabeth Baxter

September 8 - October 18

Reception September 18th, 5 p.m.

Award-winning multidisciplinary artist, Mary Enoch Elizabeth Baxter, will be on campus September 17-21 to show her work in the Kittredge Gallery, visit classes and meet students. Baxter’s work seeks to interrogate connections between anti-blackness, women’s rights and systems neglect within social institutions and society at large. Thus, by centering the lived experiences of Black women and girls and reframing narratives of trauma, she creates nuanced stories about the collective fight for self-determination, communal healing and repair.

This show will focus on Baxter’s reimagining of Thomas Eakins’ photographs in Consecrations of Mary, her film Ain’t I a Woman, and new work created during her residency on campus. Baxter’s visit and exhibit are in conjunction with Crime, Law, and Justice Studies and Mellon Humanities for all Time.

Marcavage investigates the layering of color and the interaction of mark – and the physical, conceptual, and optical aspects of these components in printed impressions. Mutability and impermanence is conveyed through multiplied color blends, shifting marks, and color grids. The experience and actions of being a caregiver influence her work.

Reception and artist talk March 4th, 5 p.m.

This solo exhibition by ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú's incoming Assistant Professor of Sculpture, Rebecca Padilla, explores what it means to carry grief, memory, and matter in the wake of ecological collapse and dislocation. Through mixed media sculpture, installation, and material assemblage, Padilla transforms remnants such as seed pods, concrete, and salt into vessels of memory, resistance, and repair. Bearing witness to loss while cultivating care, this exhibition invites viewers into acts of holding and connection as quiet gestures of survival.
