Philosophical Education in the Anthropocene - Nature Ethics and Eco-Phenomenology
Passau Faculty Exchange Lecture: Dr. Florian Wobser
Join us for a guest lecture with Dr. Florian Wobser, Lecturer in Philosophy at University of Passau, Germany. Everyone is welcome!
As part of his residency at Puget Sound, Dr. Florian Wobser will deliver a lecture titled "Philosophical Education in the Anthropocene - Nature Ethics and Eco-Phenomenology". His talk is free and open to the campus community.
In Philosophy, a discussion of nature usually has theoretical (e.g. "How to define the difference to culture?") or practical (e.g. "Should we have an anthropocentric or physiocentric attitude to nature?") goals - this talk aims at another perspective especially on the nature-culture-tension by arguing that it is crucial for an ecologically motivated philosophical education, in the times of the Anthropocene, to strengthen our aesthetical attitude to nature. The interplay of arts and philosophy is important in order to sensitize humans for nature. This eco-phenomenological awareness seems to be necessary, firstly, to improve the human-nature relationship and, secondly, as a pedagogical foundation regarding judgments in theory or practice. The talk includes some general arguments and some illustrative media examples for motivating specific ways of doing philosophy as eco-phenomenology.
Coffee & tea will be served at 5:00 p.m.
Presentation & discussion will start at 5:30 p.m.
