Dear Loggers,

We will conduct a campus-wide earthquake and building evacuation drill on Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2025, from 10:40 to 10:50 a.m.

The Drill will start at 10:40 a.m., with an announcement through a Logger Alert message to “Drop, Cover, and Hold On,” the primary safety actions to take during an earthquake. This alert will be sent , campus email, desktop alert, and interior and exterior speaker system.

  • If you are outdoors during this phase of the drill, please move to a clear open area away from buildings, trees, streetlights, and power lines, as these can fall and cause injury. Once you are in a safe open space, you should Drop, Cover, and Hold On.
  • If you are inside when you receive this notification, please Drop, Cover, and Hold On under a sturdy table or desk, or against an interior wall, protecting your head and neck with your arms. Stay away from windows, heavy furniture, and mirrors, and remain indoors until the shaking stops.

At 10:45 a.m., a second Logger Alert will be issued to evacuate the buildings. When you evacuate the building, we expect you to go to the designated gathering space for the building you exited. We ask all to remain at their designated gathering location until you receive an alert that the drill has ended.

At approximately 10:50 a.m., a “drill concluded” message will be communicated through a Logger Alert message and all interior and exterior speaker systems.

To keep this exercise to 10 minutes, we will use at least one audio alarm system in each building, but we will not activate all fire alarms in every space on campus. Community Clinic activities in Weyerhauser will be exempt from the drill.

It is essential that we can reach you in an emergency. To receive emergency messages, students, faculty, and staff must have their cell phone numbers in addition to their complete contact information listed with the university.

  • Students, please review and update your cell phone number through the portal at by selecting ‘My Information’ and ‘Personal Information’ to review and make any necessary changes.
  • Faculty and staff, please review and update your cell phone number through the portal at by selecting ‘HR Staff Resources’, ‘Personal Details’ (left side menu), and finally ‘Contact Details’. If your cell phone number is not listed or is incorrect, select ‘Change Phone Numbers’ to correct or add your cell phone number. Note: Make sure your current cell number is listed on the ‘Cell’ line, even if it is also your home telephone number.
  • If you have any difficulty navigating MyPuget Sound, please contact the Service Desk at 253.879.8585 or servicedesk@pugetsound.edu for assistance.

Evacuation procedures are described below for residential buildings, academic and administrative buildings, and outdoor spaces.

The map for our designated Emergency Gathering Areas for building evacuations is identified on maps posted throughout campus and on the website.

During some emergencies, the elevators may not be operational for safety reasons. In these situations, and for our drill, we ask that if you are unable to use stairs to exit a building, go to the closest stairwell to await assistance. In some buildings, there is signage designating these spots as an Area of Refuge. If you are not able to get to the stairwell landing, we ask you to wait in the hallway for assistance. For our drill purposes, Security will be checking each floor to provide directions on how to exit the building. In the case of an actual emergency, please call Security at 253.879.3311 to request assistance and provide your location.

If you are aware of individuals needing assistance to exit the building, please notify Security personnel near your designated gathering area as soon as possible.

Residential Building Evacuation Procedures:

  • Resident Directors and Assistants are responsible for their respective buildings. They should tour their buildings quickly to communicate evacuation instructions to residents verbally.
  • Residents should close their room doors and exit their residences via the nearest exit.
  • Residents should proceed to their residence gathering area and report their presence to a Residence Life staff member (for personal accountability purposes).
  • During the drill, Resident Assistants should complete a Person Accountability Form per procedures.

Academic and Administrative Building Evacuation Procedures:

  • Wheelock Student Center staff and Collins Memorial Library staff will help guide occupants out of the building to their respective gathering areas.
  • Hosts of visitors are responsible for guiding visitors out of buildings to their respective gathering areas.

Practicing emergency response is critical to life safety in the event of an actual emergency. The primary objectives of these drills are to practice and test emergency communications, safety skills, and building evacuation and gathering area procedures, including processes to account for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Please review Puget Sound emergency preparedness and response plans at www.pugetsound.edu/emergency.

Thank you to everyone for your participation in the earthquake and building evacuation drill. We appreciate your dedication to maintaining a safe working, learning, and living environment.

Thank you,

David Ferber, Ph.D. | Director of Security Services
